UPDATED STATEMENT: Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19) and the Fairfax County Democratic Committee

[NOTE: Until further notice, the FCDC office is closed to the public but we are maintaining regular operations.]

May 22, 2020

The Fairfax County Democratic Committee (FCDC) is an organization that takes the health and well-being of its members seriously. As such, and because the average member is at increased risk of serious health concerns related to the spread of COVID-19, we will continue to watch the information provided by the Governor, the Virginia Department of Health, and Fairfax County as guidance for how to resume normal operations.

The Governor has announced a multi-phased blueprint to easing restrictions called “Forward Virginia”. Within that framework, during Phases I and II of “re-opening” in Fairfax County:

  • FCDC and its Committees will continue to be prohibited from meeting in-person, but may use phone or electronic meetings in their place; and
  • The FCDC Office will remain closed to all but limited essential operational use by the Executive Director and Treasurer/Assistant Treasurer for activities that cannot be done remotely.

Broader easing of restrictions under Phase III is not currently expected before early July and may be delayed in Northern Virginia and Fairfax County. As we approach this time, we will provide additional information about how our organization may safely resume in-person meetings and use of the office. We endeavor to continue to provide methods of remote participation to ensure the safety of those vulnerable.

Sincerely,

Bryan Graham
Chair, Fairfax County Democratic Committee

Fellow FCDC Members,

The safety of our community and members is our highest priority. FCDC Leadership is following the developments related to the Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) and tracking the guidance from the County, State, and Federal levels. We are working closely with Democratic Party of Virginia (DPVA) to develop plans and contingencies for continued operations as we head into this critical election year.

We highly suggest that our members follow the guidance put out by the CDC to protect themselves from both the Coronavirus and the flu:

  • Wash hands often and thoroughly with soap and water; If not available, use hand sanitizer,
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Cover your mouth/nose with a tissue or sleeve when coughing or sneezing.
  • Avoid contact with people who are sick.
  • Stay home while you are sick and avoid close contact with others

No one should feel compelled to attend an FCDC event during this time. Our members must do what they think is right to be safe. Our recent bylaws changes added an attendance requirement for voting members, but the bylaws also added an attendance waiver process which we will use, if necessary, to ensure that the status of our members is not affected by the need for safety.

Some FCDC events are already being cancelled or rescheduled out of an abundance of caution. At the moment, the FCDC headquarters office hours remain 10 am to 4 pm Monday – Friday. Please check your emails and the FCDC calendar for event status regularly, as things may change fairly quickly.

Sincerely,
Bryan Graham
Chair, Fairfax County Democratic Committee
