Fairfax Senate Dems Sweep Post Endorsements
“Senate Democrats have been the grown-ups in Richmond. The role was forced on them by House Republicans, who have sent over waves of reckless legislation.” — WAPO
The editorial board of the Washington Post has made a clear argument for how state and local government should be run and where Virginia is headed, thanks in part to the leadership of Democrats in Fairfax County.
Senate Democrats running in Fairfax county made a clean sweep of the endorsements from The Washington Post, highlighting them as legislators who stand up for veterans, the elderly and disabled, environmental concerns, mental health, and criminal justice issues.
SINCE THE 2007 ELECTIONS, when they gained a narrow majority in the upper house of Virginia’s General Assembly, Senate Democrats have been the grown-ups in Richmond.
Incumbent Linda T. “Toddy” Puller was called “a problem-solver who has been a champion on veterans’ issues,” while George L. Barker was noted for his effectiveness as one of the most pragmatic lawmakers in Richmond.
Representing parts of Fairfax County, Toddy Puller, George Barker, David Marsden, Barbara Favola, Adam Ebbin, Mark Herring, Chap Petersen, Dick Saslaw, and Janet Howell were all given the stamp of approval in their races this election cycle. Their Republican challengers were often characterized by thePost’s Editorial Board as ideological, quixotic, and offering no reasonable alternative policies with which to improve the County or Virginia.
In another key endorsement, The Washington Post also threw their support behind current Fairfax County Board of Supervisors chair, Sharon Bulova, in her race against Republican real estate agent, Michael “Spike” Williams, who seems woefully unqualified compared to the long, sterling record of Bulova.
With her gracious, civil, inclusive political style, two decades of previous experience on the board and mastery of the county’s $6 billion budget, Ms. Bulova is indisputably the right person in the right job at the right time.
Fairfax County Democrats have shown they have the experience and competence to lead Virginia. But their opponents are still contenders this fall unless every Democrat comes out to knock on doors and make phone calls.
