Republicans in Richmond Declare War on Women
Virginia and its legislature’s preoccupation with women’s bodies have become the headline and topic of every major news outlet – not only in this country, but in places as far away as Australia. There’s a concerted effort by the Republican majority in the General Assembly to roll back women’s rights. What is happening here is appalling. It’s an affront to civilized people who are in disbelief that this could be happening in the United States in the 21st century.
Fortunately the public pressure is starting to have a positive effect, but we need to keep it up.

We knew this was coming. As Democrats, we knew what the outcome was going to be after we lost the Governor’s mansion in 2009 and control of the Virginia Senate in 2011. We understood what hung in the balance and our worst fears are being realized.
Our Democratic Delegates and Senators are doing what they can as defensive measures – pulling for amended bills, trying to kill the outrageous bills at every opportunity. Finally, the citizens of Virginia are waking up to what is at stake here. Now they are demanding that we “do something” to stop this terrible train wreck from happening.

So what can we do? What can you do?
We can support the efforts of those newly awakened Virginians and other outraged women and men around the country to put a stop to legislation that is systematically destroying women’s rights. We saw the difference that many voices shouting together can make when the Komen Foundation reversed its decision to cease funding to Planned Parenthood and when the SOPA legislation was killed. Our voices are making a difference this time, too. We saw the effect it had when the organization Speak Loud With Silence brought out over 1000 people to protest at the Capitol in Richmond.
First, we invite you to join the FCDC Women’s Action Committee. Next, we urge you to use email, phone calls, letters to the editor, blog posts, Facebook, Twitter, Digg, Reddit and any other social communication platform you use – to educate people about what is happening. There are so many articles and videos on the web already from CNN to Saturday Night Live – PASS THEM ALONG! Infect other people with your passion for social justice – friends, neighbors, co-workers, family members, fellow parishioners – tell it! Be a witness for social justice in Virginia.
Reach out to independents, cross-over voters, socially liberal Republicans and pissed off citizens who are “non-political.” We have to stop this attack on women RIGHT NOW!
