Think It's Over? Think Again.
Today, I went out canvassing. I took these two ruffians with me to show them what their father does all the time.
We went to our local staging location about 3/4 mile away in Hollin Hall and our organizer gave us a section of Kirkside Precinct. Just so you understand something about Kirkside – Kirkside Precinct has something like 75% Democratic performance. It is anchored by the famous community of Hollin Hills – a large community of modern archictecture mostly populated by white liberals. It had 18% voter turnout in the 2005 Democratic Primary and 40.5% in the 2008 Democratic Presidential Primary – #1 out of 228 in the County by 4%. There is no friendlier territory IN VIRGINIA other than Kirkside Precinct.
So me and the girls trucked down the street and hit about 40 houses. My daughters were fighting over who got to actually knock so we worked out a system which resulted in equal door knocking incentivized by post-canvassing milkshakes. We IDed 2 McCain supporters (a woman who remembered me from when I was in preschool) and about 25 Obama-Warner-Moran supporters. If people weren’t home, we left them literature.
As we are hitting my last 5 houses, I see a Lexus drive by slowly and do a u-turn. The driver, an 60 something woman is looking at me, and comes back up to me with the passenger window down. She says to me “are you the one handing out this Obama stuff.” I said “yes.” She said, “here, take back your trash” and hands it to me. Here’s what she gave me.
So this genius thought it was necessary to (1) chase down and Obama Campaign volunteer, (2) not just deface his literature, but take the time to put a white sticker in the middle of it to write on it, and (3) chase down this volunteer to give it back to him – AS IF THIS WOULD ACCOMPLISH ANYTHING. Not to mention the fact that she pulled this on me in front of my two little daughters. So now I have to explain to my 6 year-old what “a racist” is (she didn’t understand people were capable of this).
Now, this is seriously pathological behavior.
This happened in the most Democratic and highest turnout voting precinct very likely in the entire Commonwealth. If you think what happened to me is bad, people like this are all over not just Fairfax County, but the entire Commonwealth. They are still out there.
Get out and knock some doors. If you are able and you haven’t done it yet, you are not doing all you can. There is still work to be done.  Let’s go out, finish this now and show these people that our country is better than this.
