FAIRFAX COUNTY DEMOCRATS NOMINATE SHARON BULOVA

As of 5:00 p.m. today, only one candidate has filed to run for the Chairman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors – Supervisor Sharon Bulova.  Pursuant to the Call to Caucus issued last week, the unassembled caucus has been canceled and the Fairfax County Democratic Committee congratulates our nominee Sharon Bulova for the February 3, 2009 special election to replace the vacancy created by the resignation of Gerry Connolly.
Supervisor Bulova was first elected to the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors in 1987 to represent Braddocki District.  She is currently Vice-Chair of the Board of Supervisors and currently chairs the Budget Committee.  Supervisor Bulova was a founding member of the Virginia Railway Express Operations Board which she has chaired four times and has been a member and Chairman of the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission. She has also served on numerous other boards, commissions, and organizations, and has been extremely active in community affairs.
Supervisor Bulova’s likely opponent has been on the Board of Supervisors for 18 months.
In the last four years, the Fairfax County Democratic Committee has built and solid grassroots network that was specifically designed to get out the Democratic vote in special elections.  FCDC looks forward electing Supervisor Bulova on February 3
The investments made in the Democratic Party of Virginia’s voter file, volunteer management system, and the technology investments made by FCDC in its own internal operations well-position the Democratic Party to compete in special elections.
Moreover, Fairfax County voters have roundly rejected Republican principles in the last four countywide elections.  Fairfax County is facing serious challenges in light of revenue declines from the recession and a declining real estate market affected by the subprime mortgage collapse.  The Fairfax Republican are likely to nominate the most conservative anti-government member of the Board of Supervisors from the most conservative supervisor seat in the County to represent their party in this election.
Today, during a recession, is especially not the right time to place an anti-government ideologue in charge of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors when critical budgetary decisions need to be made.  We must continue to build on the successes of President-Elect Obama, Senator Elect Warner, and Congressman Elect Connolly as we continue to invest in our community.  Congratulations to Supervisor Bulova and get ready for February 3!
