FAIRFAX COUNTY – In response to Governor Glenn Youngkin’s Friday afternoon attack on LGBTQ+ students, Fairfax County Democratic Committee (FCDC) Chair Bryan Graham released the following statement:

“The Youngkin Administration’s newly announced attack on students is unconscionable and cruel. This is yet another example of Youngkin’s out-of-touch policies that are a result of his absentee governorship. Instead of fawning upon MAGA Republicans in other states, Governor Youngkin should be at home, listening to Virginians who overwhelmingly support inclusive schools that meet the needs of all students.

“Democrats fully support education as a public good and an important thread in the fabric of American culture and values. Schools are much more than places for children to learn to read and write. Schools provide safe havens to children who live in uncertain or chaotic environments, to children who are food insecure, and to children who are abused or neglected. The Youngkin Administration’s attempt to undermine the confidence in our schools is part of a larger attack on public education propped up by dark money organizations.

“The proposed model policies on the treatment of LGBTQ+ students deny Virginia parents the confidence that their children’s needs are being met in a safe and affirming environment. We will not stand by as MAGA Republicans imperil the wellbeing of our children.”

Fairfax County is home to 8 of the top 10 best public high schools in Virginia, and is ranked as one of the best school districts in the country. FCPS was an early adopter of inclusive policies for LGBTQ+ students. Fairfax County scores a 100% rating on the Human Rights Campaign Municipal Equality Index.

The FCDC encourages parents, students, and public education advocates to submit their opposition to these disastrous policies as soon as the public comment period begins on September 26. Details will be available at FairfaxDemocrats.org and on the Virginia Department of Education website.
